Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has directed all the 17 Transition Council Chairmen to immediately liaise with security agencies, local vigilante services, traditional rulers and youths, to ensure the protection of all Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, facilities within their areas.
This was contained in a terse statement Saturday night by Enyinnaya Appolos, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor
“They are also to ensure that the March 9 election is peaceful before, during and after the exerciseâ€, it read.
“This directive is sequel to intelligence reports received by the state government that desperate unscrupulous politicians are advanced in their plot to import hoodlums from outside the state to disrupt the coming elections for their selfish reasons.â€
There have been cases on arson on a number of INEC offices across the country.
The next general elections (governorship and state houses of assembly) are scheduled for Saturday March 9.
