Seven family members in Egba community, Agatu Local Government Area, Benue State, have been hospitalized after consuming pap, also known as “Akamu,” made from corn.
The affected individuals include a widow named Amina Isah, her four children, and two grandchildren, who were reportedly poisoned after unknowingly using guinea corn mixed with chemicals for planting.
According to Dr. Oyaje Sule, the proprietor of Gana Clinic, where the victims were treated, three family members, including the widow, were brought in unconscious. The victims ranged in age from three to thirty years, excluding the elderly grandmother.
The family had mistakenly used leftover guinea corn meant for planting, which had been mixed with chemicals, to make pap. After consuming the pap, they began vomiting and became unconscious.
Dr. Sule confirmed that the victims were in critical condition upon arrival but have since been revived.
He stated,
“What I was told is that the family had mixed chemical with guinea corn they were to plant, after planting the guinea corn, the remaining was brought home and they washed and ground it to make pap.”
“It was after they took the pap this morning that they started vomiting and some of them were unconscious before they were rushed to my clinic.”
The victims include Benjamin, Piko, Esther, Hassan Emmanuel, and another unidentified individual.
The Benue State Police Command spokesperson, SP. Catherine Anene, was unavailable for comment at the time of the report.
