Drama has unfolded as Senegal is reportedly said to have moved the AFCON trophy to a military base following a controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
It would be recalled that CAF stripped Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and awarded it to Morocco instead.
The decision followed an appeal by Morocco over the outcome of the January 18 final, where Senegal had originally secured a 1–0 victory in extra time.
According to the CAF Appeal Board, Senegal forfeited the match after their players walked off the pitch in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco, citing Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations.
The controversy centers on the final match, during which Senegal’s players left the field in protest of a late penalty decision in favor of Morocco.
In a video circulating on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), a young man wearing glasses is seen holding the AFCON trophy while surrounded by military personnel.
The clip shows the officers expressing excitement as they gather around the trophy, with one of them recording the moment.
In a fresh development, Senegal has announced plans to challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), with several officials and players voicing anger and disappointment.
The Senegalese government has also called for an international investigation into alleged corruption within CAF.
