An eight-year-old boy has reportedly shot and k!lled his neighbour’s 12-year-old son while playing with his father’s gun in Maiduguri.

A 12-year-old boy, Musa Audu Idrisa, d!ed after being fatally shot with a Dane gun by the young neighbour in Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, Borno State.

The incident happened on Wednesday, March 17, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m., while the children were playing at home.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the boy, Abubakar Inusa, allegedly gained access to a loaded Dane gun that had been carelessly left unsecured by his father, Inusa Mohammed, a 45-year-old member of the Nigerian Hunters Group.

The victim was quickly taken to the State Specialists Hospital Maiduguri but was confirmed d3ad on arrival.

His body was later released to the family for burial in line with Islamic rites.

Police confirmed that the firearm used has been recovered, and investigations are ongoing into the negligence of the parent responsible for keeping the weapon.

Security operatives also stated that a full investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department is in progress to help prevent similar incidents and ensure accountability.
