A young man, identified only as “Obote”, has sounded the alarm over his involvement in a secret cult group, revealing that he now fears for his life and is desperate to leave.
The anonymous message, which surfaced on social media on Sunday, explained how what began as curiosity quickly escalated into a troubling and dangerous situation.
He disclosed that he is currently in hiding to avoid other members, describing the group as violent and unpredictable. His cry for help has sparked renewed discussions online about the dangers of cultism, particularly among young people in Nigeria.
“I joined cultism out of curiosity and I’m not feeling it. I have been hiding from my fellow cultists and they call me ‘Obote’. Everything about it is dangerous. I want out but I don’t know how. I don’t feel safe anymore. Please, is there anybody that has been a cultist and successfully got out? I need help before something bad happens,” he said, expressing deep fear and regret over his decision.
Cult-related violence continues to be a persistent problem in parts of Nigeria, especially within tertiary institutions. In recent years, clashes between rival groups have resulted in injuries and fatalities.
Security experts caution that leaving such groups can be challenging due to threats and possible retaliation, advising affected individuals to seek support from trusted authorities and professional counsellors.
The situation underscores the ongoing risks associated with cult involvement and highlights the need for increased awareness and intervention efforts to prevent recruitment.
