Head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, is optimistic about the future of Ghana’s national football team, pointing to the inclusion of new players as a crucial part of building a strong, competitive squad.
As Ghana prepares for the upcoming Unity Cup, Addo has brought in five debutants—marking a bold move aimed at the team’s future rather than just short-term results. According to the former Ghana international, this is all part of a calculated plan to inject fresh energy and depth into the squad.
“With some of our regulars unavailable due to fitness issues—players like Mohammed Kudus, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Ernest Nuamah, and Antoine Semenyo—it’s the right time to give opportunities to talents we’ve been watching closely,” Addo explained in an interview with the Ghana Football Association’s website.
Coming off impressive victories over Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Ghana is riding high. Still, Addo insists the job isn’t done and sees the Unity Cup as a valuable test for newer players to earn their place.
“These matches are just as important as our World Cup qualifiers. They give us a chance to see how well the newer players adapt under pressure,” he said. “Team building doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, and giving young players a platform is one of the key steps in that journey.”
Addo emphasized that fostering healthy competition is essential. “When you create space for young talent, it brings the best out of everyone. We’re not just focused on individuals—we’re focused on building a unit that’s balanced, hungry, and ready to fight for the country.”
He also highlighted the importance of the Unity Cup in the team’s broader roadmap. “This tournament gives us the opportunity to assess both returning and new players, and how well they blend into the system. It’s a key moment in our preparation for what lies ahead.”
Ghana is set to face archrivals Nigeria on Wednesday, May 28, at the GTech Community Stadium in West London. A win in that match will see the Black Stars advance to the final, scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2025.
As the team evolves under Addo’s leadership, Ghanaian football fans will be watching closely—hoping this mix of youth and experience becomes the winning formula for future glory.
